France moved early on plastic tableware — plastic plates, cups and cutlery were banned from 1 January 2020, ahead of the EU-wide ban in 2021. Under the anti-waste (AGEC) law, fast-food restaurants have used reusable tableware for dine-in meals since 2023, so disposable cutlery in France now goes mainly to takeaway, delivery, events and catering — exactly where wooden cutlery is used.
